Shawn J – Ghetto R&B Pt. 2 (Mixtape Review)
Artist: Shawn J
Mixtape : Ghetto R&B (Hosted by Tha Advocate)
Ever since musically inclined artists felt pain they put it into a song format. The blues was one genre that echo’d the pains of the ghetto. Nowerdays you have R and B. In 2010 most R and B you hear is recycled and the days of painfelt lyrics seem so far away.
The struggles of the Ghetto aren’t even heard anymore. Well .. that is until now. A new artist coming out of Florida, named Shawn J, has a mixture of original raps and singing. He calls this project, “Ghetto R & B“.
This mixtape is hosted and mixed by Tha Advocate. Advo has been on his mixtape grind this year, Grade A status. Now this is another co-sign.
The mixtape opens with Advo and Shawn J’s intro. You can feel the anticipation build as the intro winds into the thunderous “intro music”. Alot of people slept on Lyfe Jennings 08 smash called, “Cops Up”. Well that didn’t stop Shawn J from lending a 16 and few additional vocals.
Shawn spits.. “See he make it wrong, but I make it right though/ No need to worry shawty you insured like Geico/ Lil mamma like the way my game flow/ so I shoot it so soft ,shoot it just like a free throw”.
On the flip side of things Shawn J flipped an old school classic to make a modern day baby maker. Make sure you check out “Sex U“. This is straight R and B. Shawn sings “So close the door…. I got what you been waiting for”. The mixtape stand out by far has to be “Baby Imma Hit”.
This has radio and club smash written all over it. The hook sounds something similar to Baby from Cash Money. Even though mixing was subpar and sounds like a work in progress, it is a winner. Another track called “The Paper” is live and for the streets. Shawn goes in lyrically and the hook says it all. It is a chopped up Notorious B.I.G. sample which works for all of us. What is the point of working if you don’t get “The Paper”? Make sure you download Shawn J’s- Ghetto R and B (Link below)
