May 28th, 1987 a lyricist was born in Fayetteville, NC. Growing up in the Commonwealth of Virginia as the years went by her family and peers did not know she would grow to be the lyricist she is today. Born Shantale Person, she began writing at the young age of 8.
Now residing in Richmond, VA Ms Proper is always on the microphone and always ready for her next challenge.
HipHopLEAD: Today we are chilling it with a new up and coming rapper named Ms Proper. That is an interesting name. For starts where did the name come from?
Ms Proper: Haha interesting story.. I was going through a time where I wanted a rap name to define myself and my style and while I was brainstorming I saw a license plate that read PROPR or something of that nature. I added “Ms” in front of it and liked the sound of it. Then was born Ms Proper.
HipHopLEAD: Seems like North Carolina quited down since Petey Pablo, but with J Cole back out now it showed lyricists exist again from there. How do you feel about J Cole?
Ms Proper: I respect J Cole as an artist and a lyricist. Being a native of Fayetteville myself it feels good to see someone rise from this area.
HipHopLEAD: What made you wanna get into HipHop?
Ms Proper: I always had a love for Hip Hop. Even when I was in middle school I wanted to start my own record label. I would sit in my room and listen to the latest Jay Z or Eminem record and instantly want to write something myself. They are so influential and I thought to myself “I want to do that too”. So in a sense Hip Hop made me cool. Haha.
HipHopLEAD: It is sited your mother helped your expression through words. Do you think getting into poetry was an essential part of making you an emcee?
Ms Proper: Of course. I initially began writing poetry just trying to be like my mother and they developed into rhymes. I began using my writings as an outlet to my pain. If no one else understood me Hip Hop did.
HipHopLEAD: Alot of people say the majority of the rappers in the South are not lyrical. After listening to your music, its apparent that quality lyrics are important to you. What makes you not want to not dumb it down?
Ms Proper: Well for one I’m not a dumb individual haha. I don’t down the simplicity of many southern rappers because a lot of times they are speaking from their personal experiences and reaching out to their target crowd. My music may not catch the ears of the dope boy on the corner and that’s fine with me because I take pride in remaining myself in my music. I will never be a cookie cutter artist or conform to what the industry wants me to be. Love me or hate me either way you can’t deny my talent.
HipHopLEAD: What projects have you released to date?
Ms Proper: I am currently on my third mixtape Proper Etiquette which was released May 21st and I’ve previously released two other mixtapes. Addicted To The Game was the first mixtape I ever released came out January 13th 2007 and I followed that with The Wake Up which came out June 2nd 2009.
HipHopLEAD: Which was your favorite and why?
Ms Proper: I would have to say Proper Etiquette is my favorite as of right now just because I feel like I have gotten better with each release so I’m always going to love my best work.
HipHopLEAD: What is the plan for “So Proper Entertainment” in the next 5 years?
Ms Proper: Our goal is to take things to the next level. I honestly believe with our talent, hard work, and determination we can become a house hold name.
HipHopLEAD: Any new projects coming out? Any features?
Ms Proper: I am currently working on my joint mixtape with So Proper Entertainment artist Concise titled L.A Kwam which stands for Lyrical Assassins Killing With A Mission. I am currently featured on the mixtapes of Concise (Show & Prove) and E*Klipse Tha Champloo (Chess In The Clouds) of So Proper Entertainment’s mixtapes as well as Kleos & davy Jones of Smooth Dirty Productions mixtape The Nerd And The New Guy. E*Klipse Tha Champloo and I have flirted with the idea of doing a joint EP together.
HipHopLEAD: What is a typical day like for you?
Ms Proper: I wake up and respond to all the missed messages in my blackberry then check my twitter and facebook accounts. Then it’s off to my 9-5 and I always end my day with working on music whether it is writing new material or networking,
HipHopLEAD: Are you impressed with the response you have received from your presence on Digital Dynasty ?
Ms Proper: I’m very impressed because I have always felt like I put out quality material, however, now it is finally getting noticed.
HipHopLEAD: Here at HipHopLead.com we like to ask our features some questions that really are out of the norm.We do this because it gives the fans a broader outlook on you.So lets get it cracking…. J Cole or Drake?
Ms Proper: Haha I was JUST asked this question the other day. I put it like this, from a lyrical stand point J Cole wins automatically but from a commercial aspect and when thinking about diversity Drake would have to win. I am a fan of both artists at the end of the day.
HipHopLEAD: Are you feeling Eminems music he put out this year?
Ms Proper: Growing up I was the biggest Eminem fan and honestly the material he put out on Relapse I wasn’t really impressed with. I felt like he brought more of the silly Eminem rather than the gritty aggressive Eminem which I prefer.
HipHopLEAD: Why aren’t they cleaning this oil spill up yet? How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
Ms Proper: Haha. Honestly, that’s a question we will never be able to answer until we are able to understand majority of the government’s actions. All I know is they need to do something fast. How can we be in a “go green” mindstate when oil is polluting our water and becoming a major hazard for aquatic wild life.
HipHopLEAD: Back To The Norm……. Name 1 song you’ve done that will have the HipHopLead.com viewers hooked!?
Ms Proper: If they love J Cole then they will love what I did to “Who Dat” but honestly Proper Etiquette is filled with tracks that anyone will love. It’s something for everyone on that mixtape.
HipHopLEAD: Thanks for hollering at us and in closing give any shoutouts….links to your sites….or whatevers clever
Ms Proper: Alright well first off shout out to So Proper Entertainment: Concise, NSane Da Genya Bread Man, E*Klipse Tha Champloo, Tre, & T*Starz. Shoutout to my mama! Haha Sam and everyone that supports me whether family or friends. Tha Advocate, Rated R Radio, MATunes.net, MusiqWorldOrder.net, VA, NC, the lovers and the haters because they both talk about me.
