White House Press Secretary Questioned For Jay-Z’s “Open Letter”
Jay-Z’s “Open Letter” may have recently been released just yesterday but already the record has made its way to the White House. Yesterday, April 11th, during a White House press conference, White House press secretary Jay Carney was asked about the President Barack Obama reference on Jay-Z’s newly-released record as well as the rappers controversial journey to Cuba.
Jay-Z refers to President Obama in this particular lyric:
“Obama said ‘chill, you gonna get me impeached’/ But you don’t need this shit anyway/ Chill with me on the beach.”
During the press conference, a reporter quoted part of the song for Carney and then asked if President Obama had some kind of conversation with Jay-Z regarding his trip to Havana, Cuba. Carney then stressed that the U.S. Treasury Department takes care of such matters and shared that there was no communication between the President and Jay-Z.
“I guess nothing rhymes with ‘treasury.’ Because Treasury offers and gives licenses for travel as you know and the White House has nothing to do with it,” Carney explained. “I am absolutely saying that the White House and the President on down had nothing to do with anybody’s travel to Cuba. That is something that Treasury handles.”
Produced by Swizz Beatz, “Open Letter” features both Jay-Z and Timbaland and debuted April 11th on Hot 97.
